A Spotlight on..... Isabel Vandersteene

IV

Isabel joined Perrigo - Medgenix over three year's ago in October 2018. She is leading the quality team since November 2019 and is currently recruiting for a Quality & Compliance Officer to join the team!

Can you tell me a little bit about your team?  The team consists of a QA and QC department, both with their own manager, but working closely together. Together we ensure that quality is continuously 'embedded' in all our activities. Of course we do this together with all employees and managers on site!

Does working in this environment differ from your previous experience? Before Perrigo, I worked in different large pharmaceutical companies, but always in a quality role. Pharmaceutical environment is quite regulated; differences are more related to company culture and - as always - the people you work with.

How would you describe the Team culture? The quality team consists of both juniors and seniors, creating an ideal mix of experience and innovative spirits!

How would you describe your leadership style within the Quality function? As a leader, I learn every day! I don't like hierarchy, unless it is really necessary, so I treat my team members as equals. As a manager, I value balance and harmony in the team, and I believe openness to discussion is key. Team meetings are often a good platform to exchange ideas or open discussions to identify supported solutions. Mutual respect and willingness to listen are also high on the list. A good work/life balance is crucial - Medgenix has already done quite some efforts here. We expect of the employee a professional attitude and a certain level of commitment. I definitely try to support development of each individual as I strongly believe in each strengths and competencies and the possibility to grow if you want. The ideal manager is the one that can be missed :)

You are looking for a Quality Compliance Officer - What can a prospective employee expect when joining this role and function? As a (junior) officer you join a team that will support and help you to get installed. We foresee a training period to give time and space to enter into the new function. The role is quite varied as you will be point of contact for many departments and persons between the Medgenix production site and non-Medgenix regulatory contacts. There is also the opportunity within this role to get to know the operational aspects (production lines, bulk manufacture, warehouse activities) as you will also be handling customer complaints and support investigation thereof. You will be the system owner of our change management system. You will support the quality lead with audit information on suppliers and supplier management. Depending on experience and competencies, there is room for further development within the quality team.

What does someone need to be successful within the role? Ideally there is a background of experience in the pharmaceutical sector and a level of knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements with regard to pharma, food, medical devices. However, from experience I know that with the right attitude, the willingness to learn and an open mind, a good level of common sense .... it is possible to start in this role.

What is your favourite aspect about being part of the Quality function? Our job every day is to deliver good, quality products to the market. That is what we all work for. To do that, we need good systems and processes, but most important -  'good' people. For me personally, that remains the greatest challenge: working with so many different people and ensuring that we work together toward the same goal.
